Inspired by the surrounding outdoor environment, a “Town to Trail” concept for the new Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center Behavioral Health Expansion was developed. Located off-site from the Roseville Medical Center campus, this new outpatient mental health clinic creates a communal space that facilitates interaction and community—the "Town"—while providing serene pathways—the ”Trails”—to promote recovery and rehabilitation. To support a tranquil atmosphere and reduce stress and anxiety, the interior finishes and organic patterns create intuitive wayfinding for patients, staff and guests as their make their way from the Welcome Center and through the waiting area, group therapy rooms and offices.

The waiting area represents the “Town Square”, providing opportunities for social interaction and active waiting. Seating alcoves and 3-D cutouts bring a sense of whimsy and play for pediatric patients. Beyond the Welcome Center, splashes of vibrant color with murals inspired by nature create a harmonious and healing environment.

Using Kaiser Permanente’s Total Health Toolkit and design excellence standards, a collaborative and team-centric approach resulted in a facility that is inspired by nature, empowering the member, visitor and caregiver through access to nature and social interaction within a vibrant and uplifting environment. Steps were taken to incorporate design features to meet sustainability goals, including a daylighting study to incorporate natural light as a healing element wherever possible. Clear and translucent panels throughout the public spaces allow daylight to flood the space, even when a window is not within close proximity. Supporting the “Town to Trail” concept, the materials and textures in all functional areas connect the outdoors and natural elements to enhance and support the path to healing. The renovated space now provides Kaiser Permanente patients and staff with a safe and vibrant environment which promotes healing, minimizes stress and anxiety and creates a sense of community.
