EA desired a heart for its campus—a link to bridge the campus experience from previously built Phase 1 to the current Phase 2 and was seeking an energetic and creative identity dining experience for the Campus Commons. To create a sense of harmony amongst all program areas—from the lobby to the outdoor café—natural materials were sourced from the British Columbia landscape and repurposed through an earthen yet crisp color palette. Douglas fir contrasts with black patina metal detailing and accents of blue and green (reminiscent of the Vancouver landscape) genuinely reflect the natural beauty and materiality of British Columbia.
Stepping away from the typical corporate cafeteria setup and instead focusing on an elevated and efficient dining experience creates a new sense of place for EA’s employees. Inspired by food halls, markets, and restaurants the dining experience varies as much as the day-to-day taste of each diner. Key elements such as newly crafted menus, locally-roasted coffee, and an assortment of grab-and-go options extend from the café into the lobby and public spaces. Designed to morph throughout the day to fit the needs of busy employees, the café accommodates the lunchtime rush, afternoon snack breaks, or catching up over morning coffee.
Many design elements within the space are the result of partnerships with local craftspeople. A specialized woodworking artisan utilized Western Red Cedar to craft light pendants for the café, symbolizing the energy of forest life and the sanctuary the forest provides. A Vancouver-based lighting designer worked collaboratively with the designers and architects, to create additional café lighting inspired by EA’s Star Wars games. EA honors and reflects the world around them and the design team aimed to deliver a uniquely British Columbian experience to employees and visitors alike, highlighting the connection to the vast and beautiful landscape.
