Traditionally financial investment management has been seen as a “closed-door” business. For several years industry-leading investment management firm Balyasny Asset Management (BAM) has strived to challenge this workplace mentality. By creating more open and transparent environments, disparate departments are now cross-collaborating and flourishing via stronger connections. Additionally, by integrating the heads-down work culture with a variety of social spaces, BAM has seen an improvement in the overall well-being of employees.
The primary goal for BAM’s San Francisco office was to establish clear company branding through architectural features and amenities, while fostering BAM’s mission to create more connected and collaborative workplace.
Backlit millwork signage guides visitors to the BAM suite, which features a wood portal constructed of high-gloss fumed Larch paneling; the entry portal is contrasted by the bright white marble floor of reception beyond. As visitors enters the brightly lit space, they immediately encounter dramatic views of the San Francisco Bay.
The open office directly past reception, separated only by a glass wall, is flanked by a series of shared offices and collaborative work rooms. The open office is complimented by a variety of amenity spaces, which provides a retreat for employees. These amenities include a Cafe-Lounge, Fitness Center, and Library with fireplace, billiards table, and soft seating. These key amenity spaces feature distinctly different views of the Bay Area, and each has its own well-defined identity through the choices of furniture, finishes, and lighting.
Lighting design both connects and defines unique spaces. A continuous lighting fixture carries visitors along the main circulation, and feature lighting highlights each gathering space.
Overall, high end finishes are used to create a warm and inviting space. Additionally, special consideration was given to promote a high degree of connectivity within BAM’s office, as well as its relationship to the city.
