The University of Southern California Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience is a world-class hub for biosciences and bio-engineering research. Standing in the southwest quadrant of the historic University Park Campus, the Center brings together interdisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers, and medical researchers to engage in collaborative research that will lead to breakthrough innovations for advancing human health. This state-of-the-art research facility was designed to bolster and incentivize collaboration, creating an environment of flexible research that promotes a “people-collider” of science.

Housed in a “historic cloak” of brick and terracotta, the Center challenges preconceived notions of a scientific research facility, reflecting a spirit of openness and transparency. Laboratories on each of the four floors (above grade) are enclosed by floor-to-ceiling glass to reveal the science within. Furthermore, workspaces within the labs are programmed for maximum flexibility and can be readily adapted to suit the needs of research teams. The building’s three hundred windows bring natural light throughout all workplace, collaboration and research spaces.

At the same time, the Center’s work and social spaces are deliberately shaped to produce serendipitous encounters and encourage collaboration. The building’s egress staircases, for instance, have been activated to enhance connectivity between floors. Breakout spaces, conference rooms, and collaboration corridors all contribute to the participation and interaction of staff. The Center also features a seminar room, a multipurpose room, a café and a kitchen/collaboration hubs on each floor.

With its highly advanced laboratory facilities, 100 gigabits of fiber connectivity, and a massive, vibration-insulated cleanroom, the Center provides a cutting-edge hub for innovation that serves as an integral part of Southern California’s burgeoning biomedical research corridor.
