The Boston office of this international consulting firm represents a new direction for the company. Having pioneered a mobile work style and prided itself on working primarily in its clients’ offices rather than its own, the firm is now seeking to take the opposite approach, and establish offices which will become destinations for both their employees and their clients. Supporting a diversity of activities, creating space for community, and highlighting a shared sense of creativity are now the goals.
In Boston, the public-facing areas are exemplified by two adjoining spaces near the workspace entry: a boardroom and a creation zone, which reflect the two primary kinds of client interaction that take place here. Deeper into the space are dedicated employee areas, including a work café and a library, where both a variety of types of group work and also private focus time are amply supported.
The look and feel throughout are meant to reflect recognizable elements of the city of Boston as well as the local business community and the firm’s clients in this region. The color palette focuses on blues and greens, taking its cues from the Charles River and the Boston Public Garden. Wood furniture and millwork is stained or painted, adding texture and referencing the New England style of an old Boston Club or an Ivy League library—but much less stuffy, and reinvented for today’s work purposes.
The space is infused with hospitality-like touches, creating a sense of community. The aesthetic is highly professional, but always welcoming and comfortable. A long fireplace suggests a sense of hearth and home while other areas may echo a more hotel-like setting. Group work, private focus time, socializing, and creativity are all amply supported in an environment that draws collaborators from around the Boston area.
