The objective was to save this disintegrating fisherman’s shack from disappearing into the waters of Bodega Bay. California Coastal Commission restrictions prevented any enlargement of the structure (except for elevating it out of the wave zone), but the fenestration and interior plan were allowed to be modified. The approach taken was to interpret the simple, vernacular form with a modern vocabulary, and in doing so open up the structure to the views of the Bay beyond. Various materials from the original structure were salvaged, such as the beadboard (used on all the interior walls) and the interior doors. Solar panels were integrated into the roof design, enabling net-zero energy consumption. The roofing slates were salvaged from dismantled barns. The flat ceilings were re-milled redwood tank stock. Even all the furniture (except for a few custom pieces) was purchased second-hand (www.chairish.com).
