Kaiser Permanente Riverside Cirby Medical Offices is a 210,000SF primary care facility with a 5-story building housing specialty services in Allergy, Eye, and Obstetrics, as well as a 1-story pavilion with pharmacy, lab and conference center. This Medical Office is designed for true collaboration supported by state-of-the-art technology, delivering access to high quality, affordable health care to its members in a healing environment.
The overall building form and interior layout work synergistically to create clear zones for patient care and staff support, breaking templated and repetitive programs into more intimate settings. The courtyard between the medical offices and pavilion functions as a large outdoor gathering and dining space, supporting Kaiser Permanente’s community and educational activities. The landscape zones around the building all flow seamlessly with adjacent departments to support respite, physical therapy, and staff activities.
The client challenged the design team to maximize the available budget, which they successfully accomplished by the intentional use of color, signage, environmental graphics and art to reinforce the Kaiser Permanente brand, enhance member experience and anchor the project to the local community. The interior colors express themselves through the glassy curtainwall of the building’s exterior, elevating the building’s presence and visibility from afar. Carefully curated, regionally-inspired art and graphics along with precise color, material finish palette, and furniture selection resulted in a bright and uplifting environment for all occupants, especially for members as they navigate to their destination within the facility.
The building’s focal point is a 5-story “Thrive” stair that connects the main lobby with central reception areas on the floors above. The open stair directs views toward the beautiful Sierra Mountains beyond and is accentuated by a “waterfall” glass sculpture that shimmers and moves, inviting occupants to use the stairs and encouraging healthy activity that is central to Kaiser Permanente’s THRIVE campaign.
