When Chef Michael Mina decided to set down his roots in the heart of Wine Country, Sonoma with his new American Modern concept, the hotel owner DiamondRock Hospitality Company approached the design team to create an invigorating venue that resonates with the unique quality of the region. The design concept for the project, “Maker’s House” took the chef’s goal of creating social gathering spot for locals and visitors, but tailored it to reflect the heritage, community and individuals of Sonoma. The space features the concept of artisanal craftsmanship and draws its inspiration from “Wit & Wisdom”, eponymous writings and essays of late novelist and local legend Jack London.
The challenge was to retain most of the existing interior shell for a budgetary reason, while strategically removing walls and ceiling to create a strong flow from the entry, bar to the dining area and inserting new design elements. Upon the entry to the restaurant, the feature wood burning oven is immediately visible and is flanked by the bar, open kitchen and dining area.
The adjacent alfresco garden dining area equipped with a bocce ball court celebrates the natural beauty Sonoma offers. The overall space exudes the sense of community that is uniquely Sonoma and highlights local residential sensibility in millwork, furniture and materiality, punctuated with a local potter’s display and Jack London themed artwork throughout the space echoing “Wit & Wisdom.
